Checksum
Also: hash, fingerprint
A short fingerprint computed from a file that changes if the file changes.
In more detail
Comparing a file's checksum with a trusted value shows whether it has been altered, which makes it an integrity control. It does not show who changed the file, and it only helps if the trusted value is itself stored safely. Commands such as shasum and sha256sum compute one.
