Process
Also: running program
A program that is currently running, with its own memory and the permissions of whoever started it.
In more detail
Opening an app starts a process. A process can only do what its user account is allowed to do, which is why a program started by an ordinary user is less dangerous than the same program started as an administrator. Security tools watch processes because malware, and misbehaving agents, have to run as one.
