Dry Run
Also: preview mode
Running a command in a mode that reports what it would change without changing anything.
In more detail
A dry run resolves the real targets and prints them, which makes the scope questions answerable before any damage. It only helps if the tool supports it, if it is the default for risky operations and if the real run uses the same resolution as the preview. Many destructive tools, from version control cleans to sync utilities, offer one. A helper that defaults to dry run and requires an explicit apply flag turns a slip into a message.
