Environment Variable
Also: env var
A named setting a process receives when it starts, passed on to every child it starts.
In more detail
HOME and PATH are common examples. Many tools also read secrets such as API keys from environment variables. Because children inherit them, a secret exported in a shell is readable by every program started from that shell, and it often ends up copied into logs and crash reports.
