Child Process

Also: parent process

A process started by another process, which inherits its owner and environment.

In more detail

Every process except the very first is started by a parent. The child runs as the same user and receives a copy of the parent's environment variables. Following parent links backwards shows what really launched a suspicious process, and it explains why anything started from your shell runs with your rights.
