Kernel
The core of the operating system, which controls memory, processes, files and hardware for every program.
In more detail
Programs ask the kernel for everything through system calls. Containers share the host kernel, so a kernel bug can break their wall; virtual machines bring their own kernel, which is why their boundary is stronger.
