Packet
A small labelled chunk of a message, sent across a network on its own and reassembled at the destination.
In more detail
A packet carries the source and destination address and port plus a piece of the data. Routers read the label and pass it on. Unless encrypted, the contents are readable by machines that carry it, and the source field can be forged.
