Heap

The region of memory for data that must outlive a single function, which the program requests and releases itself.

In more detail

In C a program asks for heap memory with malloc and returns it with free. Forgetting to free leaks memory; using a block after freeing it is a use-after-free; writing past its end is a heap overflow. Memory-safe languages manage the heap for you.
